Lovelink Mission Continues in El Salvador

What do you say when you are looking at over 350 prison hardened gang members?  Sam Hawkins, founder of Lovelink, says the first thing that pops into his heart. "I love you, and you, and you."  Such was the scene at one of El Salvador's prisons last fall.

Hawkins answered the call with other missionaries to start a new prison ministry in the Central American country.

Hawkins said, "I'm always looking for more challenges to serve the Lord.  It broke my heart to see these boys, some as young as 16 who are in prison because they joined a gang. They wanted to belong to a family."

The day of Hawkins first visit to the prison, which houses the meanest gangs in El Salvador, was also the day a prison lock down occurred. The prison officials had received word of a riot that was planned inside the prison. The prison directors did not want the missionaries to enter.

After Hawkins and the other missionaries finally received permission to continue and had passed through several checkpoints, the last guard, who had fear etched onto his face. said, "I won't be responsible."

The missionaries, accompanied by ex-gang members who have since given
their lives to God, entered the block where more than 350 gang members waited for them. Hawkins recalled the massive intensity of the hostility he felt. He recounted that he "walked with the authority and in the Spirit of the Lord."

"I love you," he said as he looked into the prisoners' lonely eyes. These men all know the power of the law and of judgement. They watched and listened as Hawkins continued, "I love you. Who is this white haired man standing in front of you? I have white hair. I'll be your grandfather, your family."

Hawkins and the other missionaries had to then explain how it was they could love these men through Christ.

The prisoners who have found forgiveness and the Lord are mighty worshippers. They raise their tatoo filled hands, sing songs and praise God as the tears course down their faces. They understand judgement. They understand forgiveness.

Hawkins continues to cross the line in faith and find what he knows. God will always provide for him when he does.

The First Presbyterian Church in Peachtree City is sponsoring a mission trip to Lovelink in El Salvador in February.

Ten Thousand Villages Comes to Episcopal Church of the Nativity

Ten Thousand Villages is part of a worldwide movement striving to practice fair trade. IFAT members agree that fair trade is an alternative approach to conventional international trade. It is a trading partnership aimed at sustainable development for excluded and disadvantaged producers. It seeks to do this by providing better trading conditions, by raising awareness and by campaigning.

Ten Thousand Villages is a founding member of the International Fair Trade Association (IFAT) and a member of the Fair Trade Federation (FTF), both of which aim to improve the livelihood of disadvantaged people in developing countries and to change unfair structures of international trade.

All Saints Anglican Church of Peachtree City officially installed its Rector, Reverend Michael Fry last week. Bishop David Anderson of the Convocation of Anglicans in North America (CANA) led the proceedings.

“It was just a beautiful ceremony,” said parishioner George Press. “A very moving event; I am just glad to be part of it all.”

The rite which is properly known as the Office of Institution involved the passing of the keys to the 303 Kelly Drive church to the priest. Senior Warden David Wardell, the ranking lay member of the parish made the presentation.

Anderson gave Fry a copy of the Holy Bible and the Book of Common Prayer and charged him with following them in performing his duties while leading his congregation. Fry, who was appointed rector last November, then led the parish in Holy Communion.

As one of six Bishops in CANA, Anderson is charged with the spiritual and administrative leadership of all congregations in the southeastern United States. CANA is headquartered in Herndon, Virginia under Bishop Martyn Minns and is affiliated with the Anglican Church of Nigeria.

PTCUMC Now Hosting Food Distribution Ministry

Beginning in February, Peachtree City United Methodist Church will serve as the first host site for Angel Food Ministries in Peachtree City. Angel Food Ministries (AFM) is a non-profit, non-denominational organization that began in 1994 as a small outreach ministry serving a rural community in Georgia. Their goal was to help people who needed a hand up in a tough economic time. Today, Angel Food Ministries can be found in over 3,200 communities in 35 states and helps feed over 500,000 families a month.

PTCUMC will partner with Angel Food to help distribute food to families in need in the Peachtree City area. For $30 a family can purchase a box of food containing both fresh and frozen items that would cost $50 or more at local stores. The menu, which changes each month, is published in both English and Spanish on the AFM website at www.angelfoodministries.com so that it can be viewed prior to placing an order. The February box will contain 11 lbs of beef, chicken and pork, 7 lbs of fresh and frozen vegetables and fruit, a jar of peanut butter, a box of soup mix, one box of cereal, a package of dried beans and one dessert.

By purchasing the basic box, you are then eligible to order one or more monthly special. In February there are three specials:

· 6.5lb Steak and Meat Combo, $20

· 3.75lb Prime Rib Steak Box, $19

· 10lb Chicken Combo Box, $18

The public is invited to make food orders in person at PTCUMC on either of two dates each month, which will be about two weeks before the delivery date, with payment in cash or food stamps (EBT) at the time the order is placed. Orders for the February shipment will be taken at the PTCUMC Children and Youth Campus, 400 Windgate Rd, on these dates:

· Thursday, Jan. 31, from 6:00 - 8:00 PM

· Saturday, Feb. 2, from 8:30 - 10:00 AM

Paid orders must be picked up on Saturday, Feb. 16, from 9:00 - 10:30 AM, at 400 Windgate Rd. At that time menus, order dates and the delivery date for the month of March will be available.
