President Bush, Weekly Radio Address (Easter)

THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. This weekend, families across America are coming together to celebrate Easter. This is the most important holiday in the Christian faith. And during this special and holy time each year, millions of Americans pause to remember a sacrifice that transcended the grave and redeemed the world.

Easter is a holiday that beckons us homeward. This weekend is an occasion to reflect on the things that matter most in life: the love of family, the laughter of friends, and the peace that comes from being in the place you call home. Through good times and bad, these quiet mercies are sources of hope. On Easter, we hold in our hearts those who will be spending this holiday far from home -- our troops on the front lines. I deeply appreciate the sacrifices that they and their families are making. America is blessed with the world's greatest military, made up of men and women who fulfill their responsibilities with dignity, humility, and honor. Their dedication is an inspiration to our country and a cause for gratitude this Easter season.

On Easter, we remember especially those who have given their lives for the cause of freedom. These brave individuals have lived out the words of the Gospel: "Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." And our Nation's fallen heroes live on in the memory of the Nation they helped defend.

On Easter, we also honor Americans who give of themselves here at home. Each year, millions of Americans take time to feed the hungry and clothe the needy and care for the widow and the orphan. Many of them are moved to action by their faith in a loving God who gave His son so that sin would be forgiven. And in this season of renewal, millions across the world remember the gift that took away death's sting and opened the door to eternal life. Laura and I wish you all a happy Easter.

Thank you for listening.

Local Philoptochos, "Friends of the Poor”, Helping the Community

Philoptochos is one of the largest philanthropic organizations in the country. The Greek word Philoptochos translates literally to “Friends of the Poor.” Philoptochos is the right arm of the Greek Orthodox Church: a society of the spiritually faithful, united in love and service. The late Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras established the Ladies Philoptochos Society in 1931 for the purpose of helping the Greek Orthodox Church in its ministries. Today there are over 475 chapters and 28,000 members in the United States.

Internationally Philoptochos gives to such organizations as the IOCC (International Orthodox Christian Charities) who helped when the Tsunamis hit, when Hurricane Katrina devastated the gulf coast, and more recently with the tragic fires in Greece. Nationally Philoptochos supports the St. Photios Shrine, shrine of the first Greek Orthodox Church in America, the Children’s Cardiac Fund and Unicef. A total of $1,373,431 was donated in 2007 from the National Philoptochos programs. Philoptochos has exemplified Christian Stewardship in nearly every area.

The local St. Christopher Hellenic Orthodox Chapter of Philoptochos in Peachtree City was formed in September 2004. The St. Christopher Chapter supports the Fayette Samaritans, Fayette County DFACS, the Loaves and Fishes program at St. John the Wonderworker in Atlanta (which serves the hungry twice a day) and the Fayette County Community Christmas Program.

Each January, the St. Christopher Philoptochos Chapter holds its annual Vasilopita Dinner to raise funds for St. Basil Academy in Garrison, New York. Philoptochos purchased the land for the Academy in 1944 and it continues to be one of the main financial supporters of the Academy through various programs. The mission of the Academy of Saint Basil is to provide a loving, Orthodox Christian residential home in which the children who seek the Academy’s protection are transformed through faith, academics, mutual respect, trust, pride, positive values and teamwork.

Over the past four years since its inception, St. Christopher’s Philoptochos has raised over $10,000 in support of St. Basil Academy. Also, in 2007 alone, they raised $6,465 which was donated to charities and commitments. For membership information, please contact Julie Skouteris, Chapter President, at gsjs401@joimail.com.

All Saints Choir Duo Preps For Chorale Concerts

All Saints Anglican Church choir members Rosalie McVay and Sheri Schafer are pulling double duty with their vocal cords these days.

As long-time members of the 70-voice Southern Crescent Chorale, McVay and Schafer are busy practicing for the March 30th Spivey Hall concert entitled “Norman Luboff’s Choral Legacy.”

The 3 p.m. concert will include many of Luboff’s most famous arrangements of folk songs, spirituals and pop music. Concert-goers will hear such favorites as “All My Trials,” “Whistle While You Work” and “Yellow Bird.” Later on May 17th at the Villages Amphitheater in Fayetteville, there will be a Chorale concert entitled “A New York State of Mind.”

“Participating in the Chorale has been a truly exhilarating experience.” Schafer said. “The director, Janice Folsom is amazing. The music is varied and challenging and the Chorale members are an extremely friendly, talented and supportive group.”

McVay and Schafer modestly try to downplay their roles in the Chorale because of the great depth and breath of talent in the group. But both McVay and Schafer are talented in their own right, having been involved with music since elementary school either playing instruments or singing in church choirs.

McVay, a veteran math teacher at Fayette County High School, said, “ The choir at All Saints is great. They are always willing to try new music, even very difficult stuff. Shannon Bryan, the director is talented and easy to work with. Father Michael Fry listens to us and our input about music for the services.”

Schafer agrees that singing in All Saints choir as well as in the Chorale is a labor of love. She said, “All Saints is my home away from home. It is a loving church family of God-fearing people who worship with enthusiasm and reverence.”

Others might think the two would wear themselves out with all their singing, but McVay and Schafer aren’t worried about that; they say they look forward to the next practice either at All Saints or with the Southern Crescent Chorale..

Don't mess with sugar

FF Note - We rec'd this back on 3/4/08 so the call has already happened. We thought some of our readers might be interested in taking a look at The Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility, or possibly want to do a bit of research on the sugar issue... so we're sharing!

That is the rallying cry of religious investors who will launch a major new Web-based campaign at www.DontPlantGMOBeets.org to urge more than 60 leading food, beverage, restaurant and candy companies to oppose the spring 2008 planting of genetically modified sugar beets.

The genetically modified sugar beet crop would be used to make the sugar consumed in thousands of the most widely consumed food products in the U.S. (The Web site will go live immediately prior to the news event TODAY.)

The Interfaith Center for Corporate Responsibility (IRCC) campaign will focus on such major companies as McDonald’s, Campbell Soup, Kellogg, Kraft Foods, Sara Lee, PepsiCo, Wendy’s and Hershey’s.

News event speakers will be: Leslie Lowe, director, Energy & Environment Program, IRRC; Margaret Weber, coordinator of corporate responsibility, Adrian Dominican Sisters; and Jeffrey Smith, author of “Seeds of Deception” and “Genetic Roulette.”

You can join the live, telephone-based news conference (with full Q&A) by dialing 1 (800) 860-2442 by 1:30 p.m. EASTERN TODAY (March 4, 2008). Ask for the "ICCR GMO protest" news event. For more information, feel free to contact me at (703) 276-3265 or aawolf@hastingsgroup.com.

I hope you can join us for this important news event today! -- Ailis

Men's Encounter to Meet March 8

Men's Encounter, a non-denominational study for men led by Minster Jesse Asmond, will meet Saturday, March 8, 2008 at 8:00 AM at the Hampton Inn in Fayetteville. You won't want to miss this month's teaching will be on Fathers Bestowing Blessings on Their Sons

Some of us grew up with fathers who did not know about the blessing and how to command the blessing upon our lives. They were not equipped to speak God's Word in the areas of relationship with God, vision & purpose, prosperity, leadership, spiritual manhood, and other areas of our lives.

This Saturday, Minister Asmond will pray the blessing on every man who has not had his father bestow the blessing upon him. This will have a powerful healing affect on the heart of those men. You can also bring your son's that are age eight and above. Minister Asmond will lead you in prayer to bestow your fatherly blessing upon them. Remember, Abraham blessed Isaac, Isaac blessed Jacob, Jacob blessed his twelve sons, etc. Words are Spirit and they are life, so let's speak life, to each other and to our sons!

The Hampton Inn is located at 110 Meeting Place Drive in Fayetteville, just off GA Hwy 54, approximately one half mile west of the Courthouse. The side parking lot of the hotel is easily accessible from Tiger Trail.
