The First Presbyterian Church in Peachtree City starts the second season of their popular community concert series with Tim Zimmerman & The King’s Brass on Sunday, September 20 at 6:30 pm. This exciting group presents hymn classics with a contemporary flair.

The King’s Brass, formed over two decades ago, is comprised of professional musicians from across the country. These instruments blend together to create a time of innovative worship that will be enjoyed by all generations.

The June 2009/2nd Quarter crime statistics have been posted on our site for public review.

Citizens,

We've just added our statistics summaries for June 2009 and 2nd Quarter 2009 on our website at http://www.tyrone.org/crimestats for your review. We experienced a slight decrease in overall crime in June 2009 and thefts continue to be our most prevalent crime type, so please continue to make sure that your valuables are secure and remember to lock your vehicles at night as we continue to see entering auto cases where the vehicles were unlocked.

I also want to remind our readers to call 911 or 770-461-HELP (4357) immediately if you witness suspicious persons, vehicles, or activity in your neighborhood. Our officers apprehended a burglary suspect this week thanks to a citizen calling in a suspicious vehicle in their area. The suspect was charged with four felony counts including burglary, possession of controlled substances, and possession of burglary tools. The suspect also had in his possession a handwritten list of addresses of homes under construction from all over the Atlanta Metro Area, including the address of the home he had just removed copper wiring and pipes from here in Tyrone. The Tyrone address was the only one that had been crossed off the list, but our officers contacted the affected agencies just in case and none reported having any burglaries at those locations. Needless to say, our citizen thwarted several crimes in the Metro Area with one phone call!

Our officers are here to respond to your requests for service, no matter how trivial they may seem to you so please do not hesitate to call us. Better safe than sorry!

Fellowship of Christian Churches and Friends Holds 5th Sunday Celebration

Chattanooga Boys Choir in Concert with Southern Nights Chorale at Peachtree Christian Church

The Cantabile Choir of the Chattanooga Boys Choir will join the Southern Nights Chorale in a free, 90-minute choral concert at Peachtree Christian Church on Sunday, May 17th at 3:00. The church is located at 1580 Peachtree Street.

The Cantabile Choir is the changed-voice component of the Chattanooga Boys Choir under the direction of Vincent Oakes. The CBC was founded in 1954 as a music education and performance organization, and presently has over 140 boys from ages 8-18 in five different choirs. The Cantabile ensemble was added in 2002 from graduates of the organization's treble (unchanged voices) choirs, and many of its members have been singing together since the third grade. Southern Crescent Chorale to Perform at PTC First Presbyterian March 28

The Southern Crescent Chorale has established a reputation for excellence and achievement in the arts community of south Atlanta. Now in its seventh season under the direction of Janice Folsom, this 65-voice auditioned community chorus’s mission is to enrich the communities of the southern crescent with a variety of choral literature with high performance standards. Yes We Did: LifeWay Launches National "I Matter" Movement

/24-7/ -- LifeWay Christian Resources announces the launch of their national "I Matter" movement, which intends to initiate a positive dialogue about the worth in all of God's people. "This is really more than an ad campaign," says Dawn Cornelius, Marketing Strategist for International and Ethnic Markets. "It's a movement based on God's Word that says every person has value, worth, and a purpose."

The initial Web campaign for women will eventually launch into multiple phases for men and families through various touch points. African-American churches are the target audience, but the campaign will be inclusive to everyone who wants to join the conversation about being empowered to live for Christ.

Cornelius explains, "We are introducing the 'I Matter' campaign to the Black community with a 'no stone left unturned' marketing effort. We want the entire community to become engaged in this movement around why people matter. We launched this campaign to celebrate the uniqueness and worth of every person, and it will intentionally foster positive images that celebrate and empower people of many races and backgrounds so that everyone understands the intrinsic worth, purpose, and value that they have in God."

With no specific time constraints, the movement will be a sustained, disciplined marketing effort driven by people sharing their stories and ideas with others on the Web, in conferences, and through their own communities. Along the way, LifeWay will offer guidance to those searching for products, resources, and events to support them in their various roles of ministry to others. People are invited to submit stories online and to create videos that will become part of the national campaign.

Key campaign components will include:
• A dedicated "I Matter" Web site
• A multi-city road show as part of exhibits starting in June 2009
• Videos celebrating why people matter
• An outlet for others to voice why they matter
• Suggested resources to support and equip
• A credo to enable women, men, and families to begin their own conversations in their communities

St. Christopher’s Philoptochos Society Offers Greek Delicacies for Easter

The Philoptochos Society of St. Christopher Hellenic Orthodox Church will hold its annual Greek Appetizers and Baklava Sale in time for Easter entertaining. Offered are Spanakopites (filo pastry filled with spinach, feta and onions) and Tiropites (filo pastry filled with cheeses and herbs) for $10.00 per dozen and Baklava (filo and nut filled sweet pastry) for $18.00 per dozen. Griffin: First United Methodist Church and First Baptist Church To Host Five Free Pipe Organ Concerts

Celebrated organist Cj Sambach will be performing "The Pipe Organ INformance," at the First Baptist Church, 106 West Taylor at Hill Streets, on Friday (2/13) at 10AM and 1PM. Performing on the 2,000-pipe Schantz organ, these two concerts are planned as field trip/assembly programs for area schools, but are also open to the public. That evening at 7PM a reprise of his “INformance” concert will be offered to the general public.

The following, Sunday, February 15, at 9:45AM, Maestro Sambach will present his "INformance" during the morning Sunday School hour at First United Methodist Church, 1401 Maple Drive. That afternoon at 2PM, Sambach will present a full-length, formal organ concert on the church’s 2,076-pipe M. P. Möller/A. E. Schleuter organ.

Nicknamed "The Pied-Piper of the Pipe Organ," Cj Sambach has a spent a lifetime encouraging and promoting a greater appreciation for the “King of Instruments.”

Organ performance is his greatest love and sharing this love with audiences everywhere is his principal enjoyment. Combining bits of humor with interesting explanations and fine musicianship, he makes the music and the organ fun for people of all ages.

Melissa's Faith Lives On

Melissa's family lives in Tyrone and has lovingly shared their thoughts in the hopes that Melissa's faith will inspire us all. Please accept our condolences on your loss.

Dear Friends and Prayer Warriors,

I am writing to let you know that my precious daughter Melissa has been taken home by our Father.

Melissa passed away on Jan 28, 2009 at 7:45pm Central time. She battled to the last drop of life left her body.

Never, through this entire battle did she question God’s love for her and she consistently praised God for all the miracles that gave her comfort, gave her a clear path to walk along her journey and kept the love of her life Ben Hamrick by her side day and night. (Ben slept in a chair beside her bed through this entire ordeal)

Through it all there have been so many obvious miracles and signs of hope.

Megan, deciding not to take her new job in Alaska, leaving the airport, going to Melissa’s house and making her go to the ER (Melissa would have surely died right then)

Ben getting a job with a great company 5 days before Melissa was diagnosed, the company fully insured Ben and Melissa and paid him a salary through the entire 18 month battle.

Melissa getting transferred to MD Anderson without a hitch and getting there in three days, with a diagnosis from NorthSide Cancer Center that she would not survive 3 more days.

The gifts and donations by hundreds of friends and family.

Toward the end, I had some angry prayers with God, because I couldn’t understand why He would set before Ben and Melissa such a clear path and so many miracles to keep them together and comfortable and then take her home to Him. I prayed over and over for an answer, “why all the obvious miracles to an end of death”? Then, yesterday as I was speaking to a Christian friend the answer came to me. Melissa had complete and total faith all along. She never faltered in trusting God. It was her time to go home to the Father and that wasn’t going to change. God gave Melissa the extra 18 months to prepare our hearts, not Melissa’s.

Thank you Lord God Almighty because, if Melissa had passed away the day she was diagnosed, I think I would have not witnessed Melissa and Ben’s faith and not known how to totally and completely trust in God against all odds. Melissa and Ben have prepared my heart and shown me how to be a faithful servant even in the worst of conditions.

All Saints Anglican Church Surprises Bishop David Anderson

All Saints Anglican Church in Peachtree City stunned unsuspecting Bishop David Anderson 25 January at its annual parish meeting by a stealthy change in the agenda.

Anderson who is Suffragan Bishop of the Convocation of Anglicans in North America (CANA) thought he was to be guest speaker but instead he was the honoree who was bombarded with gifts and accolades by the two-year old church.

Outgoing Senior Warden David Wardell presented Anderson with a new set of vestments and spoke of Anderson’s many contributions to the formation and growth of all Saints.

All Saints Clerk and artist Freddy Burdeshaw presented Anderson with a portrait of the Bishop he had painted in acrylic, in which Anderson was wearing the new vestments.

Church Rector Michael Fry thanked Anderson for his leadership in CANA and his support of All Saints, then finally allowed Anderson to have the floor as guest speaker.

Anderson then gave the parish an update on development in the creation of a new orthodox Anglican province in North America and discussed some of the steps that will be required.

Afterwards the church elected new Vestry members to replace those completing their terms. Vince Bonura, Jane Carter, and Sandy Perrin were installed as the new Vestrymen, while Jim Lee extended his term. Kent McVay was named new Senior Warden. All Saints is located at 303 Kelly Drive and is currently negotiating to buy a new church building.

There is lots of clowning around at Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church! The high school youth have a wonderful clowning ministry that the congregation gets to enjoy about every six weeks during church services. Their ministry has also broadened to the preschool program.

Saddleback Pastor Continues the Message of Renewal Found in The Purpose Driven Life with National '40 Days of Love' Campaign

/PRNewswire/ -- Following in the footsteps of the popular "40 Days of Purpose" campaign that thousands of churches participated in worldwide, Saddleback Church is launching a national "40 Days of Love" campaign. The campaign, which launches across the country February 1st, is based on the book The Relationship Principles of Jesus (Zondervan, 2008) by Tom Holladay, teaching pastor at Saddleback.

Beginning in February, churches nationwide will take part in the "40 Days of Love" campaign which walks participants through the book's 40-day study guide that teaches six key principals to loving people based on the words and actions of Jesus. Built into each day's reading is a reflection on one of the principles, the scripture it is built on, real life examples, and practical suggestions to implement Christ's example into relationships. This 40-day journey is designed to bring new health and richness to participants' marriages, families, friendships, and all the relationships in their lives, producing deeper connections and renewing rocky relationships.

The six relationship principles explored in the book include:

National Black Church Studies Summit Hosted by Emory

Community leaders, clergy, scholars and students will gather at Emory University Jan. 22-24 for the 5th Annual National Black Church Studies Summit hosted by Candler School of Theology. The event will include plenary sessions, panel discussions, workshop presentations and public events focusing on the future of the black church and the theme "Where Do We Go From Here? Black Church Traditions, Textures and Transformations."

"This period in America's history marks an important juncture for black churches and faith systems," says Teresa Fry Brown, associate professor at Emory's Candler School of Theology and an organizer of the summit. "While the past two years have marked the fruition of long-awaited social change, it has also been a time of misrepresentation, misinterpretation and misguided discussions about the black church. Now is a pivotal time for black church leaders to gather to discuss the traditions, textures and continual transformations of the black church."

The summit will feature presentations and dialogue about the varieties of black religious experience, the 21st century black church, and the continuing social, political and spiritual impact of people of faith on the church, the academy and society.

JAARS Receives First Kodiak Aircraft, Improving Access to "Bibleless" Peoples

(BUSINESS WIRE)--A new solution to support Bible translation for people lacking scriptures was turned over to David Reeves, president of JAARS Inc., in Sandpoint, Idaho yesterday. JAARS is the first mission or humanitarian organization to purchase and receive the specialty Kodiak aircraft, securing serial number 008.

JAARS was established in 1948 by Wycliffe Bible Translators co-founder William Cameron Townsend to provide aviation and technology services to support Bible translation. However, the phasing out of aviation grade gasoline (avgas), and an aging fleet of JAARS aircraft, primarily comprised of piston-driven engines, is now affecting Bible translators’ ability to carry out their work. According to Reeves, the new Kodiak aircraft reaffirms the JAARS organization’s aviation leadership and continued focus on service.

“With 2,000 translation programs currently underway worldwide and almost 2,400 languages still needing Bible translations to be started, we looked into the future of aviation for a safe, effective solution to our passengers’ unique transportation requirements,” said Reeves. “The Kodiak is well- poised to meet the challenging needs of the translation community in remote operations.”

The Kodiak, developed by the Quest Aircraft Company of Sandpoint Idaho, is a ten seat aircraft with a turboprop engine capable of short take-offs and landings that uses readily available jet fuel and can carry a 3,100 pound load.

Very few regions of the world have a greater need for safe, reliable, air transportation than the vast island nation of Papua New Guinea north of Australia where Kodiak serial number 008 is headed. This Kodiak will provide access to many of the people who live in Papua New Guinea’s rugged mountains and remote coastal areas.

Wycliffe translators and national coworkers are working in partnership on 190 different language projects in Papua New Guinea. They have completed more than 160 New Bible translation projects, but at least 340 more languages have no Scriptures.

Making Time for Prayer and Religious Dialogue Top New Year's Resolution Lists

Confessing to prayer

"They keep journals, they talk to God while they're driving, they open their mouths and ask for help. Perhaps even more surprising, people report having conversations with others about God."

"They are not new for people," Lavie says of the prayers in her book. "Even though people haven't actually heard or read them before, they've had them in the back of their memory. They have them in their blood."

Making time for diet, exercise, more family time and prayer

"Of course I hear many people saying they hope this year they'll stick to their diet; Others are resolving to refrain from texting in the car and promising to keep to the minutes in their cell phone plans. Maybe it's because people associate me with prayer and so this is what they tell me, but I also hear people saying they plan to keep in touch with God this year. And when they say something like 'please, God' about those other resolutions it sounds like their diet, exercise and cell phone resolve might stick."

The Watch Night Service originated with the Moravians in 1733. John Wesley appropriated the event into Methodism where it later became a Covenant Renewal Service. It gained special significance in African American congregations where it is sometimes referred to as Freedom’s Eve when in 1863 they waited eagerly for President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Love Feasts in Moravian Tradition at Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church

Christ Our Shepherd will offer Love Feasts in Moravian Tradition on Saturday, December 13, at 7:00 p.m., and Sunday, December 14, at 6:00 p.m. A tradition of the Moravian Church since 1727, Love Feasts include serving specially-baked buns and coffee or apple juice to worshipers. All adult worshipers will be given a lighted beeswax candle dressed in a red paper “ruff.” Children will substitute a small flashlight for a candle.

Love Feasts include traditional and Moravian carols sung by everyone. Featured also will be anthems by Sanctuary Choir, Joyful Noise Ringers, Christ Our Shepherd Brass, Christ Our Shepherd Flute Choir, and da Chiesa, the Christ Our Shepherd Strings. Karl Dietmeyer founded and conducts the Flutes and Brass, while David Beecher leads the Sanctuary Choir and handbells. James C. New Hope Baptist Church presents the 2008 Living Christmas Tree entitled "The Promise" december 9 - 14! This year's production is on a grand scale with over 400 adults, youth and children taking part in the Choirs, Orchestra and Cast, as well as a 40 foot "singing" Christmas tree with thousands of computerized lights that will amaze and inspire you.

The all new original story tells of a family as they attend their town's Christmas Tree Lighting and Celebration. Upon their return home, the Grandpa tells the children the story of the Manger and the Christ Child, as it comes to life in music and drama. The final song includes a colorful Christmas Parade with special effects that will leave you feeling as though Christmas has really begun.

Enjoy "The Wonder of Christmas" at First Presbyterian Church of Peachtree City

First Presbyterian Church of Peachtree City will be hosting a Christmas Concert titled “The Wonder of Christmas” on Sunday, December 14 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary. This will be the third of six concerts given during the church’s 2008-2009 concert series season.

An orchestra and choir, along with organist Sam DeCarlo and accompanist Sue Eutermoser, will accompany the program’s festive seasonal works and carols. Talented ensembles and soloists from the First Presbyterian congregation and community will also share Christmas favorites. The orchestra and Chancel Choir will be conducted by Dr. John Odom. The praise band will be led by Jay Akins.

“The Wonder of Christmas” was created by renowned composer David Hamilton. This concert will weave contemporary songs and traditional Christmas carols with biblically based narrations. You will be reminded of the majesty of the Savior's birth. Sentimental heartstrings will be tugged by well-known songs and carols of the Christmas season and the original underscores that depict the many facets of the Christmas story.

This concert is free to the community. A love offering will be taken. Childcare will be available for children ages 4 and younger.

Festival of Lessons and Carols November 30 at First Presbyterian Church in Peachtree City

The Sanctuary Choir of First Presbyterian Church will present A Festival of Lessons and Carols on November 30 at 11:15 am. The Festival of Lessons and Carols is a format of Christian worship service celebrating the birth of Jesus and traditionally followed at Christmas. The story of the fall of man, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus is told in short Bible readings, interspersed with the singing of Christmas carols and hymns.

The service is based on the format of the traditional service held each Christmas in the Chapel of King’s College, Cambridge, England. First presented on Christmas Eve in 1918, the festival of Lessons and Carols format was created by Eric Milner-White, whose years as an army chaplain convinced him that the church needed different forms of worship. His original service was adapted from an order drawn up by E.W. Benson (later the Archbishop of Canterbury) who presented a similar service in 1880 in a wooden shed which served as his cathedral in Truro.

Almost immediately, other churches adapted the service for their own use.
The first broadcast of the service from King’s College took place in 1928. It has since been broadcast every year (with the exception of 1930), and there are millions of listeners world wide.

Mission Video Tour 2008

The group, from St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Edmond, OK will share their work mission and pilgrimage experiences. We will air their new DVD "True Acts of Grace" which tells how God has used mission trips to transform their lives in Christ. They will also share the music of Scott Chard and the Praise Ensemble from St. Mary's.

At a price of only $15 (plus $2 for handling), this cookbook is sure to get the family to the table on time for dinner! The proceeds from the sale of the book are being donated to the church for their building fund.

Here's just one recipe to jumpstart your appetite.

Chicken Enchiladas
By: Glen Fraser
• 3 C. chopped turkey or chicken (dark and white meat)
• 3 C. cooked rice
• 2 cans (10 oz) red or green enchilada sauce
• 1 C. chopped or sliced olives
• 2 C. shredded cheddar cheese or combined cheddar and Monterey Jack
• Burrito sized (10") flour tortillas
Combine meat, rice, 1 can of sauce, half of the olives, and half of the cheese in a large mixing bowl. Stir well. Spoon generous amount of filling onto tortilla, fold sides of tortilla over filling, and then roll tortilla and place into 9 1/2" X 12" pan. Repeat, placing rolled tortillas side-by-side until pan is full. Pour remaining sauce over top of enchiladas; spread evenly. Cover with remaining cheese and olives. Bake at 350 degrees for 1/2 hour or until cheese begins to brown. Remove from oven and let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

In Tough Times Many Americans Turn To Guardian Angels

(StatePoint) Times are hard for lots of families nationwide and many are looking for spiritual guidance to help them get through difficult periods.

During these episodes many people look to connect with their inner spirituality and even with their belief in guardian angels who can help them cope with the challenges of life.

Indeed, 75 percent of Americans believe in angels, according to a recently conducted Gallup poll. Another new survey conducted by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life reveals that 68 percent of Americans believe that angels are active in the world.

It is no wonder then that popular culture has been filled with stories about higher beings - from movie classics like "It's A Wonderful Life" to such television series as "Kyle XY," "The 4400" and "Touched by an Angel."

According to Kaya and Christiane Muller, co-authors of "The Book of Angels, Hidden Secrets: Dreams, Signs, Meditation," there are hundreds of situations or problems that people face - from alcoholism to cancer to depression - that can be helped by getting in touch with their spiritual sides.

"Sooner or later we all face the fundamental questions of who we are and where we are going," says Kaya, whose own personal story led him to a strong belief in spirituality and even in angels.

Kaya was a rising international singing superstar, opening for Celine Dion, having recorded several gold albums. But at the age of 25, he walked away from fame and a multi-million dollar deal from Sony Music to seek out his spiritual path when his family life fell into shambles.

His personal journey to find inner peace led him to a nearly 2,500 year-old text shrouded in mystery and mystique - a part of the rich heritage of Judeo-Christianity, known as "The Traditional Study of Angels." Atlanta gospel music fans planning to watch their favorite choirs compete during this event are encouraged to bring their no-longer-used wireless phones and donate them to the company's HopeLine(R) program. Verizon Wireless will collect the phones at booths set up at different locations throughout Philips Arena. All collected phones will support local domestic violence organizations.

HopeLine is Verizon Wireless' exclusive phone recycling and reuse program that collects no-longer-used wireless phones, batteries and accessories in any condition from any wireless service provider to benefit victims of domestic violence. Proceeds from the HopeLine program are used to provide wireless phones and cash grants to local shelters and non-profit organizations that focus on domestic violence prevention and awareness. Since 2001, HopeLine has collected more than 5 million phones, awarded more than $5 million in cash grants to domestic violence agencies and organizations throughout the country.

Those who cannot make it to the September 15 show can drop off their used wireless phones, batteries and accessories at any Verizon Wireless Communications Store across the state of Georgia, at any time of the year.

Award-Winning Gospel Artists Hosting and Judging

The Verizon Wireless How Sweet The Sound national finals are in Atlanta November 8. The semi-finalist winners from 11 cities will compete in the national grand finale. GRAMMY(R)-winning songwriter, producer arranger and music director, Donald Lawrence, will be the tour emcee at each of the 11 semi-final competitions and at the finale. Marvin Sapp, Hezekiah Walker and other gospel artists will join the competition as judges.

Melson Society Opens Anne Frank Exhibit

The Penelope Melson Society and the Ingram Library will open the exhibit “Anne Frank: A History for Today” on Sunday, Sept. 7. The exhibit is free and the community is welcome to attend during library hours.

Produced in the Netherlands and made available through the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust and the Anne Frank Center USA, the exhibit juxtaposes photographs of the Frank family with historical events of the time period.

With 55 exhibition panels that chronicle the rise of Nazism and a three-dimensional representation of the dining room of the Secret Annex, the exhibit challenges the audience to think about the value of tolerance, mutual respect and the significance of human rights.

Another component of the exhibit features photographs taken by soldier and photojournalist William A. Scott III as he participated in the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp in a segregated all-black army unit. Scott was also a member of one of the leading African-American families of Atlanta who founded and operated The Atlanta Daily World, the nation’s first black owned daily newspaper.

Adding more historical drama to the exhibit is guest speaker Dr. Leon Bass, an educator from Pennsylvania and an African-American soldier who participated along with Scott in the liberation of Buchenwald. He will speak on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center Ballroom. His presentation will also be free to the community through the sponsorship of the UWG Office of Minority Affairs.

Lorene Flanders, professor and director of university libraries, said that the exhibit would open the eyes of its viewers.

“The Anne Frank exhibit on the UWG campus gives members of the campus community and local residents the opportunity to view an exhibit that is touring the nation,” said Flanders. “We expect to welcome some 1,000 eighth grade students to campus to visit the exhibit and appreciate the volunteers who have agreed to serve as docents.”

Sponsors for the exhibit include the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Education, the Richards College of Business, the Honors College, the Advanced Academy of Georgia and the Office of Minority Affairs in association with Ingram Library’s Penelope Melson Society.

Contemporary Christian Music Featured Sunday, Aug. 31 at Powers' Crossroads 3-Day Labor Day Weekend Festival in Newnan, Ga.

The three-day Powers' Crossroads Country Fair and Art Festival, which opens for its 38th consecutive year on Labor Day Weekend, will feature an afternoon of contemporary Christian music on Sunday, Aug. 31.

Scheduled entertainment beginning at 2 p.m. on the festival's main stage includes One Way Caravan from St. Louis, Mo., featuring Adam Trotter and Kevin Schulte.

West Georgia local favorites Jake Eugene and The Summit of South Fayette, and Chandler, featuring lead vocalist Jeff Chandler, are also scheduled to perform. Contemporary Christian radio station J93.3, WVFJ-FM, Atlanta, is sponsoring the afternoon of music.

The festival, which is held every year on the rolling and wooded 100 acres of historic Powers Plantation in Newnan, Ga., near Franklin, Ga., will open at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30 with the annual Rising Star competition set to kick off at 10 a.m.

The festival will wrap up at 5 p.m. Labor Day afternoon, Sept. 1, after a 2 p.m. Miss Coweta County Pageant, a preliminary event for the Miss West Georgia competition in January 2009.

Visitors to this year's festival will also find perennial favorites in shopping for unique arts and crafts. Each of the more than 175 artisans showcasing their work for sale is selected by judges during the course of the year.

Festival hours are 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and military personnel, $3 for children ages 5-12, and free for children 4 and under. Parking is free and complimentary shuttle service is available from the parking areas.

All Saints Anglicans Have A ‘Smoky Mountain High’

All Saints Anglican Church members staged their first Family Camp recently in North Carolina and had a Smoky Mountain ‘blast.’

After three days and nights of breathing cool, clear air, getting close to the Lord and each other, some 26 campers from the Peachtree City church left Black Mountain and came home with renewed spirit. The group included twelve adults and 14 children.

The camp was held 25-28 July some 17miles east of Asheville. Campers worshipped, hiked, completed a confidence course, listened to music, and did a lot of bonding. Reverend Michael Fry led the group in Morning Prayer, Holy Communion and Vespers in the forest amphitheater.

“The most fun was on the Alpine tower and giant swing,” said Fry. “But, there was also tennis, swimming, arts and crafts, reading and relaxing. On two nights we had a bonfire and roasted marshmallows. One night featured skits as well.”

Camp organizer Charlotte Stevenson picked the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly location based on her experience there as a counselor while in college.

“The spot is drop dead gorgeous, in an old refined sort of way.” said Stevenson. “There’s a huge old, long lodge that was built in 1906 which has been used for events like this ever since. For a few years in the 1920s or 1930s the place was used as a college. Einstein taught a class there, as did Aldous Huxley.”

John Stevenson and seven year-old Andrew Fry led some of the campers on a six mile hike to the top of Old Windy, a 4,375 foot mountain a few miles from Mount Mitchell, which is the highest peak in the eastern United States.

Campers found that both rustic and more modern cabins were available. The next All Saints Family Camp at Black Mountain is scheduled for the summer of 2009. Both members and friends of All Saints are invited.

Face of Defense: Former Stunt Man Makes Leap to Ministry

Army Chaplain (Capt.) Eric Light gives a weekly sermon and is available for counseling whenever a soldier might need it. But he is not your ordinary chaplain.

"When I was in college, money was kind of hard to come by, so I became a stunt guy to pay for college," said Light, who serves with the 101st Airborne Division's 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team.

In the late 1980s, Hollywood was experiencing a writers' strike. Feeling the pinch from a lack of work there, some of the companies in show business took their shows on the road.

"A guy who was a stuntman moved into town and would put on a Wild West show while trying to obtain the contracts for movies when they came through," said Light, a native of Kingspen, Tenn., and a graduate of East Tennessee State University. "We happened to go to the same church, and he took me under his wing, teaching me the ropes."

Light began working at the Wild West show, which led to performing a few stunts for television shows such as "Unsolved Mysteries" and "Rescue 911." The work on those shows paid most of his way through college.

Following college graduation in 1993, Light quit the stunt man life and began what he said he believed to be his true calling, ministry. He started working with college students in a counselor-like role at the University of Michigan, then at the University of California State in Fullerton.

After the university's program diminished due to a lack of funding, Light found himself without a job. He struggled to find employment for a few years, eventually distributing a resume with the hope someone would contact him for work.

He finally got a call, but from an unexpected place: the Army.

"I got a call from a retired Army chaplain asking if I'd be interested in being a chaplain in the military. I told him, 'No,' because I wanted to work with college-age kids from 18 to 25 years old." Light said.

"He kind of laughed at me after that statement, because soldiers of that age make up a lot of the Army. After that, the light bulb came on, and I knew this was what God was calling me to do."

Over the next 15 months, he lost 50 pounds to meet the Army's weight standards and headed off to basic chaplains training. After graduation, he was assigned to the 1-187th Infantry Regiment, where he received word that he would be deploying to Iraq.

"Getting deployed was never a problem for me," Light said. "All of the active-duty people in my class were getting deployed, so I knew it was a matter of time. What good would I be if I could not deploy with the soldiers I am here for?"

Light said he constantly is learning and trying to improve himself as a better chaplain during his first deployment. Recently, he had an experience that served as a confidence booster.

"I was sitting outside reading when the company commander came walking by and told me I was a good chaplain," he recalled. "For someone outside of the Chaplain Corps to randomly come up to me and notice what I was doing, that really proved to me that being here was the right thing and that I was doing a good job."

While he isn't outside the wire all the time, Light said, he knows his job is equally as important. He must be there not only for the soldiers who are deployed, but also for their families back at home.

"Never in our nation's history have families had to give up so much," he said. "While I'm not out there on the front line fighting, it's my job to be there for [soldiers] when they come back. If I can help prepare these soldiers to go back to their families, I'm doing my part."

All Saints Anglican Church in Peachtree City wrapped up its first Summer Music Camp 18 July as 25 children received certificates of completion from the Rector, Father Michael Fry after parents and staff enjoyed an end-of-camp concert.

Music Director Shannon Bryan organized and led the week-long program, with the assistance of over a dozen parish volunteers. The camp, which was conducted at 303 Kelly Drive, included children of ages 6-11.

During the program the children learned a variety of hymns and praise songs and were introduced to several types of musical instruments. Different parish members provided demonstrations of instruments to include the piano, harp, bagpipes, guitar and various percussion instruments.

All Saints first Family Camp will be held in the North Carolina mountains 25-28 July.

PTC United Methodist Church Welcomes New Pastor

On June 29th, the Peachtree City UMC welcomed their new Pastor, Rev. Herzen Andone to the staff as their new Senior Pastor. Rev. Chuck Hodges, who had served as the Senior Pastor for the last twelve years, has been appointed to Athens First United Methodist Church in Athens, GA.

Rev. Andone is married to Rev. Jennifer Andone, who has just been appointed to serve as the Pastor at Inman United Methodist Church. They met while they were both students at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University.

Jennie Andone was born in Ohio but grew up in Roswell. She is a graduate of Roswell High School and Stetson University. Herzen Andone grew up in a Navy family and moved as his father’s career took him from place to place. Toward the end of his father’s service, he settled in Florida. He graduated from Escambia High School in Pensacola, Florida and, after a few years of working in the business world, returned to college and graduated from the University of Florida.

In the midst of pastoring churches in North Georgia they became parents to two boys. Dakin is 14 and Dylan is 11. Rev. Andone brings years of experience with him from his previous appointments and not only is an accomplished preacher, but an outstanding musician as well, as the congregation experienced on his first Sunday. Guest preacher will be Commander Patrick McLaughlin, a navy chaplain who has just returned from his second tour in Iraq. Earlier in his career he was chaplain at Presidential Retreat Camp David. His book, “No Atheists in Foxholes: Prayers and Reflections from the Front,” is newly published. Chaplain McLaughlin will talk about his experiences during Sunday School at 9:45 a.m. in the sanctuary. Coach Bobby Bowden to Speak at Local Church

On July 6th, the community is invited to join Peachtree City Christian Church in welcoming Coach Bobby Bowden to speak at the 10:45am an 11:00am worship services. Bowden’s visit is part of the church activities during the B.I.G. 4th of July Weekend Celebration. Other activities include a picnic fireworks at Pebble Pocket Pool and participation in the PTC Parade.

A living legend in college football, Bowden boasts more wins than any other coach in major college football history, along with a distinguished reputation among both those he coaches and those he coaches against. Bowden’s players have been recognized with some of the biggest awards in football as well, ranging from ACC All-American awards to Heisman winners, showing that Bowden is not only dedicated to excellence on the football field, but off of it as well. He has coached for 42 years, 32 of them at Florida State University, and holds a lifetime coaching record of 366-113-4. He led the Seminoles to fourteen consecutive Bowl games, the second longest streak in college football.

Of all his impressive accolades, some of Bowden’s most notable come from far outside the football world. Bowden is universally recognized as a man of great character, deeply rooted in family, and devoted to his faith. He frequently speaks to different groups and churches, particularly in the South about topics ranging from adversity to character.

Sharpsburg Baptist Church Awards Dr. Watson E. Mills Pastor Emeritus Status

Sharpsburg Baptist Church recently celebrated the legacy of their beloved pastor, Dr. Watson E. Mills, who retired June 22. At the time of his retirement banquet, former Mercer University “professor emeritus” had served SBC for 27 years, 5 months, 4 days, 6 ½ hours, but who’s counting? Several friends and colleagues “roasted” Dr. Mills at the banquet, among whom include Terry Daviston of McKoon Funeral Home and Dr. Rollin S. Armour, a former colleague from Mercer University’s Department of Religion.

The congregation surprised Dr. Mills on his last Sunday by granting “Pastor Emeritus” status. Deacons Bill Tinsley and Beth Clough presented the award during the invitation hymn and read the decree. According to Webster’s Dictionary, the definition of “Emeritus” is: a veteran who has honorably completed his service. Also, “the giving of the honor celebrates the lifetime of ministry this person has performed, recognizes the conviction that ordination continues until life ends, and also brings honor to the congregation bestowing the title.”

Dr. Mills began pastoring SBC in 1981 while serving as Vice President of Research and Publication, as well as Professor of New Testament Language and Literature at Mercer University in Macon. He commuted for 14+ years and ultimately moved to Coweta County in 1995. With Dr. Mills’ leadership, in 2000 SBC was able to build a worship, education and fellowship facility (11,200 square feet). Since that time the church has seen a growth of 150+ members. In 2003, SBC was recognized by the Georgia Baptist Convention as one of the fastest growing small Baptist churches in the state.

Mills has performed 200+ weddings, christenings and funerals, and provided pastoral care for members in all stages of life. He has delivered more than 1,075 sermons in Sharpsburg, as well as countries including the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Hungary and Switzerland. In 2004 he published The Vocabulary of the Faith, a collection of sermons delivered from the Sharpsburg pulpit. Additionally, he has published 130+ books and hundreds of articles during his career.

Among his many achievements, Dr. Mills also gave birth to the journal, Perspectives in Religious Studies. According to The National Association of Baptist Professors of Religion, the first issue of Perspectives in Religious Studies appeared in 1974. “That year two issues were published, largely by the efforts and vision of Watson Mills, founder of the journal. The journal began as a ‘shoe box operation’ out of Mills' office at Averett College (and his garage). Later, graphics arts students at Chowan College, in Murfreesboro, North Carolina, honed their skills by publishing the fledgling journal as part of their course work.

In 1979 Watson Mills moved to Mercer University, in Macon, Georgia, to establish and build Mercer University Press. Naturally PRS moved with him. In the exciting atmosphere of a new venture, the journal matured rapidly. As the circulation of the journal in creased, the number of issues also increased. In 1976 three issues were published. Later, in 1984, the journal became a quarterly publication. By 1993 PRS could boast a circulation of over 700, including libraries in colleges, universities, and seminaries in North and South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. From humble beginnings the journal has gained an international readership in two decades. An index of the first fifteen years of PRS, edited by Watson E. Mills, was published in 1989.”

According to www.mosttraveledpeople.com, Dr. Mills is ranked 52nd in the world, having traveled to 329 countries; and that number is about to increase, as he hit the “retirement trail” flying to Kyrgyzstan, China and India. SBC is proud to have had this amazing man as their spiritual leader for 27+ years. When people ask, “Where in the world is Dr. Watson Mills,” our response will be, “We hope back in Sharpsburg, Georgia near us and our hearts.

Chandra Currelly is all set to wow the crowd with her improvisational vocal stylings on July 13th. As the former lead vocalist for the SOS Band, Ms. Currelly has plenty of hits on her musical resume. In addition to pop chart success, she has explored success in other genres, including gospel, as well as acting and writing. Chandra has received numerous award nominations including an Atlanta gospel choice (best female vocalist), Helen Hayes (slam!), NAACP (Hot Mikado) and Suzie Bass (rejoice!). Her smooth, soulful, inspiration sound has its own category, one Chandra herself calls “urspijazz”, an extraordinary potpourri of urban, spiritual and jazz musical elements.

Singer and keyboardist Christopher Lewis takes the stage on August 24th. A prolific career songwriter, Lewis has penned numerous gospel jazz hits, including “Delivered”, a number-one single in 1996. Lewis nurtured his musical aspirations by singing in the church choir from age 10 and eventually moving on to quartet harmonies, directing, and pursuing a musical career writing heartfelt lyrics. Eloquent and moving, Lewis attributes his style to old-school influences such as Stevie Wonder, Sam Cooke and newer artists Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds and Fred Hammond. Lewis believes his God-given musical purpose is “to melodiously articulate dreams, desires, hope, and love”.

Doors open at 4:00 p.m. and music begins at 5:30 p.m. Concertgoers should bring blankets or lawn chairs for comfortable seating. Children of all ages are welcome and will be delighted by free activities including a moonwalk and face painting. There will be a variety of exhibitors whose products and services will be available for purchase including exquisite hand made jewelry, original artwork and more.

Volunteers Needed to Participate in Evaluating Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Program

The Georgia Center for Child Advocacy in collaboration with the Medical University of South Carolina is looking for 130 adults who work with children and youth from schools, faith-based organizations or youth-serving organizations to help evaluate “Stewards of Children,” a child sexual abuse prevention training program for adults. This could include anyone who works with children in a variety of capacities including youth groups and little league sports teams. This 3-year, multi-site, federally-funded study will determine the effectiveness of the instructor-led and online versions of the training program.

Participants should live or work within I-285 and be between the ages of 18-65. The study will take anywhere from 1 to 3 ½ hours, and CEU credits are available. Participants will receive the actual training and materials at no cost. Compensation is provided to participants. Reverend Michael Fry recognized the following parishioners and presented those on hand with a graduation gift of the English Standard Bible.

Douglas James Abrams is graduating from The Heritage School and will attend Georgia Tech. Amanda Lauren Charobee is graduating from Whitewater High School and will attend the University of Colorado in Boulder, majoring in Environmental Science and Design.

Laura L. Coffee is graduating from the University of Georgia as Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and will enter the Wildlife Pathology Residency Program at Cornell University and the Bronx Zoo in New York. Thomas Kyle Daniel is graduating from Gordon College with an Associate Degree in Fine Arts and will attend the University of Georgia.

Loren Michael Davis is graduating from the Oasis Learning Center and will attend trade school. Alex Douglas Grayson is graduating from McIntosh High School and will attend the Citadel in Charleston, S.C. Kristin Hutchinson is graduating from the University of Georgia with a Doctorate of Pharmacy.

Robert Brewton Jones is graduating from the U.S. Air Force Academy with a B.S. Degree in Aeronautical Engineering and will be commissioned a Second Lieutenant. He will also pursue a M.S. Degree in Aeronautical Engineering at the USAF Institute of Technology in Dayton, Oh.

John Patrick Perrin is graduating from the University of Georgia with a B.A. Degree in Risk Management and Insurance. Jennifer Ashley Safko is graduating from McIntosh High School and will attend the University of Georgia.
